The area today known as "Hong Kong", shows evidence of human settlement as far back as the late Paleolithic and early Neolithic eras, but the earliest recorded European visitor wasn't until 1513 and the name Hong Kong didn't appear on written record until 1842. While being largely under Chinese rule for most of its life, this area has undergone several transformations or changing of leadership during its history from Chinese to British to Japanese and back to Chinese rule. Another interesting fact, is both cases, two wars were actually fought over opium, or rather the refusal of the country's leadership to engaging importing of opium. Interestingly enough, the Japanese invaded Hong Kong when Dec. 8, 1941 just one day after their raid on Pearl Harbor in Hawaii.
The people of Hong Kong suffered greatly during the Japanese occupation of the country, in this brief four-year period that Japan was there they were subjected to rationing, forced exchange of currency, huge inflation rates and massive food shortages, causing the loss of more than half of the population before the United Kingdom regained control of the country in 1945.
To call Hong Kong, and its people "resilient" is to grossly understate the nature this nation and its people. Even after everything that's happened to them including the financial crisis in East Asian markets, the avian flu virus, and the outbreak of SARS in 2003, Hong Kong has continually shown an ability to bounce back and continue to grow in the face of adversity.
