Chi-Town, the Windy City, was ‘discovered’ by a Jesuit missionary in the fall of 1673, about 90 miles north of the Ottawa village in Illinois. Chicago became an official city to a population of 4,170 residents in March 4, 1837. At around 9:00 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 1871, the city was devastated by a fire that caused approximately 300 deaths, and an estimated $200 million dollars in damages. By 1875, Chicago was back to its original splendor, showing faint scars that this disaster had ever actually occurred, allowing the city to proudly uphold its nickname, the “City of Big Shoulders.”
