Chicago Ventrilo

Chi-Town, the Windy City, was ‘discovered’ by a Jesuit missionary in the fall of 1673, about 90 miles north of the Ottawa village in Illinois. Chicago became an official city to a population of 4,170 residents in March 4, 1837. At around 9:00 p.m. Sunday, October 8, 1871, the city was devastated by a fire that caused approximately 300 deaths, and an estimated $200 million dollars in damages. By 1875, Chicago was back to its original splendor, showing faint scars that this disaster had ever actually occurred, allowing the city to proudly uphold its nickname, the “City of Big Shoulders.”

Chicago boasts the world’s very first skyscraper on what is now called the “Field Building,” featuring a load-carrying structural frame that is rightly called the “Chicago Skeleton”. The popular name given to Chicago, the “Windy City,” is so called after an editor of the New York Sun christened the city with this title after the intense “heated” competition that took place between some of the most prominent cities of the United States of America. This argument involved who would host the Columbian Exposition, universally known as a hallmark of a city’s most proudest moments, and greatest achievements, in which Chicago won. Although the many achievements made by this great city that have in many ways changed the world did not make it here, one innovation refuses to be ignored.
