Ventrilo Administration in depth

posted on February 5th 2007

Ventrilo is a feature packed program with lots of different uses. Many people do not utilize the features plainly because they are there for the enjoyment of the users. These features include admin, comments, chat, etc.

Ventrilo Admin

Administrator:
The admin choices are great for managing your Ventrilo server. To login into admin, right click on your Ventrilo screen, and go to the Server Admin section. Once there go to the first box: Login. Type in the admin password you were given, and click OK. You are now logged into the Server Admin section. The features listed here are very simple to use. To be able to kick, ban or globally mute a user, you must be right clicking on that user?s name on the ventrilo client. Kicking makes the user exit the server and to get back in he has to reconnect. When you ban a user, it will not let them in after they are disconnected. To access the banlist to unban or ban users, you just have to click the Banlist? button. Globally muting a person prevents them from using their bound key to talk in the client. You will only see the red speaker next to the name will turn green. That way you know they are talking, but are muted so you can not hear them. The MOTD in this section is what appears when the user connects. You can change this to anything you want so everyone will be kept up to date. Rcon is the next major feature you can use with admin. This is a panel where you can control the server. Just type help in the console to get every command possible. Server Properties is the next best thing about Ventrilo. This is where you can control everything in your server!

Features on the Server Properties:
Ventrilo Server Properties Window

Comment:
This is displayed on the main server on the top in ( )

Duplicate IP?s:
If you want to have multiple people from the same IP on, keep it at no limit. This is to prevent 1 user from connecting with more the one user to the same server.

Reserved slots:
This feature is only avaliable for administrators. When this is in place, the admins on the user list can connect at all times, without the server being full.

Chat Filter:
This is for the chats used per channel. You do not need to change this, keep it on ?Global to Server?.

Channel Ordering:
This is for the way the channels will be ordered. If you want the server to automatically make them in alphabetic order, you can drag them on top of each other to move them around.

Default Channel:
This is used to make a certain channel the default channel. With this channel selected, all users will be sent to that channel upon connecting to the server.

User Inactivity:
This is when a user is AFK for longer then the time you want him to be. You can set it so that user will be kicked, or moved to a certain channels.

Always display MOTD:
This is for if you want the user to always view the MOTD of the server.

All other settings on this panel should be left alone. You will most likely show no need for anything in the lifetime that you own your server.

More Features: The Basic Ones
Two of the most useful features are on the main client. Comments and Chat. Comments put a message next to your name in () and Chat is a separate console that you can use to chat, if you do not have a microphone.
